One Day Smoke School Agenda

When you register please
inform us when you prefer to attend, morning or afternoon. This is critical
because most people pass the test during the morning session. If everyone passes
before 1 PM, our crew may pack up and go take a nap.
Each day of school will have 2
testing sessions a day-morning and afternoon. We will have one classroom
for each day of training and the classroom will start at noon. If you need the
classroom, it is best that you attend the morning session. Some people have
expressed concerns about new employees taking the classroom after the field
training. We start off with the field-training early in the morning because you
must have the sun to your back for best field conditions to read opacity. This
makes it easier to pass the test the first time. We have a mini classroom type
lecture before each day of field training. During this mini lecture we carefully
explain everything you need to know about reading opacity and how to take the
EPA Method 9 certification test. We show the smoke school standards of 25%, 50%,
and 75% several times while we are teaching. Then we conduct several practice
plumes and watch you read opacity to demonstrate that you know how to use what
you have learned during the mini lecture. If we are certain that everyone knows
what they are doing, then we will start the field testing. If you get confused,
please tell us.
The report time for the morning
session is 8:00 AM. We will serve lunch at noon. The report time for the afternoon
session is 12 noon. When you register please inform us if you plan to attend the morning or afternoon session. Most
people pass in the morning and unless we have people registered for the
afternoon session, we usually pack up and leave the location by 1PM. It is very
important to notify us is you want to come in the afternoon.
This will allow larger plants to send more people without
disrupting the mission of the plant- making nuts and bolts.
The agenda for each morning and
afternoon session will include:

Part 2 Testing and
certification:
9 AM: After everyone is present and demonstrates the ability to understand
the fundamentals and
demonstrate the ability to read opacity and pass the test.
Take the certification test
11 AM: Grade papers: We shall
grade papers on site. We will inform you when you passed and you are free to
leave. We will stay at each location until everyone passes. Most people pass on
the first run, or at least before noon. If you are one of the few who are having
a bad hair day, please prepare to stay until 5 PM just in case it happens.
Award prizes
Sign in Sheets: Be sure to sign in before you leave.
Noon: Everyone should stay for our wonderful mouth watering
lunches.
Part 3 Classroom: We will
leave the field-test location together to report to the classroom.
The classroom will be after we
finish the field-test and eat lunch. If you are taking the field-test in the
afternoon, then you should attend the classroom first and then we will do the
afternoon field-test. The classroom should last about 1 and 1/2 hours.
EPA recommends the classroom for all new attendees and
every 3 years thereafter. A few states require the classroom every 3 years.
Check with the environmental department in your state for classroom
requirements. If you prefer to take the classroom in the comfort of your own
office or your house, consider the classroom video.

Note at 1 PM we will shut down smoke
school testing if everyone has passed. Please
Contact us
if you plan to report to smoke school for the afternoon session. You can also
include this information on your
Registration
form. Please
Contact us
if you do not plan to come to smoke school on the date scheduled. Remember that
we have several smoke schools on our
Schedule
in your area. You can transfer locations and dates at no extra charge.
Precautions:
The above agenda is for when everything goes as planned. The smoke machine is a
highly technical device made from the same components that you have at your
plant. These components were not designed for going 70 miles per hour down
Americas finest pot holes. Things vibrate and break. We do extensive routine
maintenance, calibrations. and quality control. Nevertheless we see the machine
working fine one day and then the very next day something breaks. We do keep
spare parts, plenty of tools, and a trouble shooter on each crew, but sometimes
repairs take more time than any of us like to admit. If you see that we are
taking a while to fix something, then relax, go sit in your car and listen to
music. We will call you when we are ready. If you are an expert in repairs of
this nature, and a lot of you are, you do have my permission to jump in and
contribute. This will help to get the show on the road so you can get off and go
fishing.
