The Whitlow team includes 5 retired Louisiana DEQ employees and other very qualified team members dedicated to routine maintenance, quality control, and customer service. With over 100 years combined experience in environmental protection and smoke school we are the experts. We choose locations with your comfort in mind. Each location has a convenient classroom, clean restrooms, a shelter form sun and rain, and a contrasting background for reading smoke. We serve you free hot coffee, fresh donuts, cold bottled water, sodas, and a great lunch at each location.  We desire to make you feel at home. We calibrate our equipment electronically and visually with the human eye before, during, and after each smoke school. We check the zero drift before and during each test run. If the zero is off, everything is off. We take our time giving the test, so you can keep up. We give precise instructions on how to take the test. If you pay close attention and bring a positive attitude, you will pass sooner than later. If you are having difficulty understanding what to do prior to the actual test, please ask for assistance. We are prepared to stay at each location until you certify to become a smoke reader. Remember, patience and attitude are everything. Be prepared. The first test run each day will take a little longer because we take the time to teach you how to take the test. Additional test runs will be quicker. Historically, most people pass by the third run because of our exceptional teaching skills. If necessary, we will retest until dark.

We would love for you to try Whitlow Smoke School and see the difference. If you have previously registered for, and paid for another upcoming smoke school by another provider, then send in a copy of your receipt along with your registration and you can attend your first Whitlow Smoke School free. What a deal!

We always provide hot coffee, fresh donuts, ice cold water, soft drinks, and great tasting lunches at each location. If you prefer a certain type of food please let us know before the school and we will try to accommodate your tastes.

Initially, we will choose smoke school dates compatible with previous smoke school providers. Eventually, we will provide additional dates in the hope of milder weather.

Welcome to Whitlow Smoke School and welcome to customer service. We are a Disabled Veteran owned and family operated small business and we are a member of the Better Business Bureau.

Please pass all of this information to your employees. Thanks for coming.

Smoke School customer attendee parking:

Buffalo Trace does not have ample parking inside of the plant fence for our attendees. We have to use the unmarked customer parking lot. Coming from downtown Frankfort, go down Wilkinson Blvd past the sign to Buffalo Trace, to the next road to your left. You should see an old used car parking lot and small building on your right. You should see a smoke school sign here on the corner with an arrow facing left. Turn left here. Follow the curves in this road into a very large parking lot. On the far left of this parking lot on the back side is a walkway that leads to the Buffalo Trace Guard Shack.

Park close to this walkway and walk to the guard shack and sign in with plant security for smoke school. Then walk down the road to your left past the guard shack to the log cabin. If you get there before 8 AM you can find a cup of coffee in the kitchen to your right. On the second floor you will find some tables and chairs. One of our crew members will come to take you to the smoke school trailer behind the log cabin at 8 AM.

If you get there after 8 AM walk behind the  log cabin until you see our smoke school trailer.

Frankfort is probably the most beautiful locations for smoke school that I have seen. The distillery is  about 100 years old and was built on an old buffalo trail crossing the Kentucky River. Buffalo Trace is the oldest continually operating distillery in America. During the prohibition, they were allowed to remain open to provide bourbon for medical purposes.

The buildings are built of Kentucky limestone and they are rustic but beautiful. We have the classroom inside of a  log cabin used for conferences.  We have the field-test out behind the cabin under the shade trees. This location features beautiful hardwood trees, green grass and rolling hills. It is very relaxing. During the winter you can stand inside a warehouse and stay dry and warm while you take the field-test.

During the Fall Season smoke school they will be distilling the bourbon. You will have plenty of time to take the guided tour and actually watch them make bourbon. The tour takes you from distilling to bottling. It is one of the most interesting tours I have ever taken. The tour includes tasting of the smooth bourbon. Buffalo trace bourbon is available in fine liquor stores in Indiana and Kentucky. You should register in advance with Buffalo Trace to participate in the distillery tour. To register call 502-696-5996 or just ask at the guard shack. We will be back at this location every 6 months thereafter. We hope to see you there.

We reserve the log cabin  we use the upstairs of the cabin for the classroom. We cook in the Cabin Kitchen. We do not sleep there. We set up the smoke machine down the road that goes past the cabin to the top of the hill. We set up on the right edge of the road at the top of the hill. We plug into electricity across the road inside of the wood shed where they refinish the whisky drums.

Fees:

how paid.

There is not any room for parking our attendees inside of the plant fence. They do not want our attendees driving up to the gate. You will need to bring at least 6 smoke school signs. If you are coming from downtown Frankfort, put your first sign next to the Distillery sign that leads to the main gate. Stand on Wilkinson Blvd facing the main gate. Make the arrow on this first sign face to your right. Then go down to the next road to your right. On the left side of the Wilkinson you should see an old used car lot with a small building. Put one sign at the corner here on both the left side and the right side of Wilkinson. These signs should point to your left. The attendees will need to turn left here, go past a restaurant and follow the driveway into the large unmarked Buffalo Trace customer parking lot. The parking lot is large and on the far back left hand corner is a walkway that leads to the guard house.

You will have to figure out how to put 3 signs directing the attendees across the parking lot to that walkway. Bring some tape or string and you can tape or tie out signs to their signs or something. It is a concrete parking lot. Put our last sign up on the hill near the walkway. Put it up high on the hill so they can see it if cars block the view.
