The day we met New Orleans Saints Hall of Famer Kicker and all time leading scorer Morton Anderson April 15, 2011
On April 15, 2011 Angie and I attended the first annual Evening of Wine and Roses to benefit Cystic Fibrosis. Angie worked 30 years in Respiratory Care in Hospitals in Indiana and Illinois. She has treated several young people with this devastating lung disease and watched a few of them die at an early age. It was a very emotional event because the host had lost a 19 year old son to the disease and another guest speaker was a young man recovering from a lung transplant.
Uncle
George Bald left, Morton Anderson right, Angie Front and Center.
Morton Anderson
was the guest speaker. Morton
Anderson gave me a big bear hug and is a down to earth guy. We talked at length.
I was delighted to be sitting just in front of him as he made his speech. He
could tell that I was excited so he
invited me to stand up there beside him. I said that I watched you kick most of
my life and that was true. Morton is the leading all time leading scorer for the
Saints with 13 years for the Saints and 8 with the Falcons. I told Morton a
story that earned me a high 5 with him. Back in the 80’s I was sitting on my
deer stand alongside of Castor Creek near Chatom, LA. I had an earphone
transistor radio in my left ear listening to
Archie Manning Saint’s broadcast. As usual drinking from a tin cup and a
thermos bottle of Community Coffee, when I heard brush breaking in my right ear.
I turned to see a buck and doe eating pin oak acorns near the creek behind me.
At the same instant Bobby Hebert made a quarter back sneak and got within
Morton’s field goal range in the last few seconds of the game. I whispered to
the deer, “You will have to wait, Morton is kicking a field goal.” As usual his
kick was good and the Saints beat the Falcons. It was a walk off field goal.
Then I turned and shot the buck and never spilled a drop of coffee. Later Morton
told me that he was born in Denmark and came to Indianapolis on a student
exchange program for high school. Before that he almost made the Denmark Soccer
team. The football coach asked him if he wanted to try out for foot ball and if
he could try kicking. Morton says he lives in North Georgia, spending time with
his family and raising funds for causes like Cystic Fibrosis.
